GEM-ENCRUSTED SCULPTURES
The Articulation of Wonder
ART
“My practice exists at the intersection of assemblage and autobiography. I build sculptures through meticulous surface accumulation — thousands of intricately faceted elements forming a radiant jeweled objet d'art.” David
ARTIST
David O’Neil is a California-based sculptor whose work reclaims ornament as an act of authorship. He was raised in rural Idaho. The longing for elegance, theatricality, and beauty that defined his childhood now anchors his artistic practice.
Working from the California coast, David creates meticulously embellished sculptures using repurposed jewelry, antique beads, rhinestones, and select precious stones. Each piece is constructed bead by bead over months, forming a dense, reflective surface that transforms a familiar object into a luminous, non-functional artwork.
Animals — particularly dogs — serve as symbols of loyalty, tenderness, and unconditional acceptance. Through them, David humanizes glamour and elevates play into permanence.
PROCESS
Each sculpture begins with a cast form selected for posture and emotional presence. The surface is gradually articulated through clay, hand-placement of stones and beads sourced from antique markets, donated heirlooms, and custom fabrication.
